Huawei and Media

Security Issues :
Relations between India and China are still volatile
and each of its nations trying very hard to protect
each other from security risks. In October of 2009 Barath Sanchar Nigam Limited(BSNL i.e Indian Telecom) was asked by Central Bureau of Investigation to regulate its infrastructure
obtained from foreign source. In the year 2005 , Huawei was blocked from supplying equipments
to BSNL. In 2010 Indian Intelligence wanted to
cancel the contract and bring charges on BSNL for links with Chinese firms(i.e Huawei).

Copyright Infringement

Huawei has been involved in copyright battle
with CISCO and Motorola. Huawei has
been blamed for copying the source code
from routers and switches from
CISCO which it vehemently denied.
A lawsuit was filed
against Huawei and finally both Cisco
and Huawei agreed to mutual terms,
but the fight with Motorola took an
upsetting turn. Motorola won the lawsuit
and Huawei was forced to pay an undisclosed
amount of money for stealing its intellectual
property. Huawei in order to protect its
intellectual property it has filed lawsuits in
Germany, France and Hungary.

Huawei and Media

Huawei promotes Multiculturalism and multi ethnicity in its work space as well as its corporate environment. it also promotes a healthy atmosphere where people could work without any hassles. It also nurtures innovations through its R&D.  It also increase trade relations with other countries thereby increasing international exposure. Huawei recruits people from all over the world thereby increasing its knowledge bank. Huawei is efficiently uses human resources thereby producing better innovations and technology that are pretty amazing. It also promotes globalization. It follows the recent trend of Globalization by setting up R&D plants all over the world and not on its own country.

It has emerged as a Fortune 500 company in just 25 years through its innovative business strategy. The fourth estate is a powerful tool and Huawei has learnt its lessons pretty well from previous encounters with it. They have learnt to manipulate media to their advantage so as to increase their globalized revenues. Public Relations has never been the strongest side if Huawei but after its frictions with the media , they have learnt that in order to increase their revenue they had to increase their credibility, which they have done quite awesomely. When the allegation of the copyright infringement and security issues were discussed in the media, Huawei PR team handled it to their advantage . They shaped it as though the entire western world was pitted against them. This aggressive strategy helped them increase their revenues and it also brought them credibility.

Huawei's Media relations have never been good.Huawei has never been transparent with its operations be it research or its about its innovation. Huawei has tried to change this image.

Example 1 :

CNN ran a news about Huawei and ZTE which was trying for a Business deal with an American Telecom company. US law makers wrote about the lucrative deal  saying they were uneasy and suspicious about the chinese firm.CNN ran another news about Huawei's intellectual conflict with other company. The first line of the news was

(CNN) --  " China doesn't have the best reputation for respecting intellectual property rights."

New York (CNN) – “We are very concerned that these companies are being financed by the Chinese government and are potentially subject to significant influence by the Chinese military.”

Huawei has handled the following issue by allowing a third party to test the piece of code used in that Telecom firm and Mr.Cheng (CEO of Huawei North America ) gave a statement.

“I think the only challenge I see is that people didn't know us enough,”
“So we come here today, to talk with you.” - Lixin Cheng.(CEO)

Example 2 :

BBC ran a story about the security threat posted by Huawei in India. Huawei has  an R&D in Bangalore , which has a total strength of 1000 employees all of which are Indians. The Indian Central government has warned the state department that there "might" be a security threat. It has been suspected that Huawei works with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

BBC also reported another news of Huawei trying to acquire American company 3Leaf Systems. This acquisition was prevented by the US security panel and Huawei is under scrutiny. Huawei had to wait for the US president Barack Obama to sign off on the deal. Aftet the aquisition Huawei decided to sell the server farm 3Leaf systems but then again it had to wait for the White house to review it.

Huawei has been viewed by the Western world with a very cautious eye since its chairman Mr. Ren Zhengfei was an army officer in the Chinese army and they still believe that it is being run by the Chinese government. Huawei has learnt from its mistake and is now turning a new leaf . They have learnt te effective usage of media.
